Long Beans (Chawli sabji)
2 min readChawli also known as Long beans is widely used in all cultures and has a lot of health benefits. These beans is usually made in dry form and sometimes even stir fried as a dish dish.
Serves 4
Ingredients
300 grams long beans (fresh chawli)
3 tablespoons black sesame oil
2 broken bay leaves
1/4 teaspoon hing
few curry leaves
2 teaspoons cumin seeds
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon garam masala
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
2 medium sized chopped tomatoes
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon coriander cumin seed powder
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
Process: In a saucepan add half of the sesame oil. Add bay leaves, hing, 1 teaspoon cumin seeds, curry leaves and saute for few seconds. Add the beans and mix well. Add 1 teaspoon salt and garam masala. Cover the pan and reduce heat to low and let it cook for 5-10 minutes.
In another skillet add remaining oil, mustard seeds and let it splutter. Add the remaining cumin seeds and tomatoes. Cover and cook until tomatoes turn soft. Add remaining powder spices, little bit water and salt. Cover and cook on low heat for 5 minutes . Add this to the beans and add 1 cup of water. Cover and cook for another 15-20 minutes on low heat. Check the beans once cooked if they changed color and turned soft. Turn off the stove and garnish with fresh cilantro.
